5. Using basic formulas

Work through the guide, keep private notes, and mark this lesson complete when you’re ready.

01

Every formula starts with =

Excel calculates a formula when you begin it with an equals sign. For example, =B2+B3 adds two cells. Cell references let a formula use the values in your worksheet, so the result updates when those values change.

02

Use functions for common calculations

A function is a named calculation. SUM adds values, AVERAGE finds their mean, and COUNT counts numeric cells. A range such as B2:B4 includes every cell from B2 through B4.

03

Try it

Enter =SUM(B2:B4) beneath the prices in your table. Change one price and confirm the total updates.

Key takeaways

  • Formulas begin with an equals sign.
  • SUM adds values in a range.
  • Cell references keep calculations connected to your data.
